Frequently Asked Questions
What are Nintendo Switch prod keys?
Prod keys (production keys) are encryption keys required by Nintendo Switch emulators to decrypt game files. They are derived from your own Nintendo Switch console's firmware and are needed to run game backups through emulators like Ryujinx or Yuzu. Without them, the emulator cannot read or launch any game.
What's the difference between prod.keys and title.keys?
prod.keys contains the core production/encryption keys needed to decrypt game data and the operating system. title.keys contains the title-specific keys for individual games and DLC. Most games only need prod.keys, but some content requires title.keys as well.
Which version of prod keys should I download?
Always download the latest version (currently v22.1.0). Newer keys are backwards-compatible, meaning they work with games from all firmware versions. There's no reason to use older keys unless you're specifically targeting a particular firmware version.
Are these prod keys safe to use?
Yes. These are publicly distributed encryption key files used by the Nintendo Switch emulator community. They are not game ROMs or copyrighted game content — they are cryptographic keys. The zip files contain only prod.keys and title.keys text files. Always scan downloaded files with your antivirus if you're unsure.
Why does the emulator say "Keys are missing"?
This error means the emulator can't find the prod.keys file in the expected location. Check that: (1) you placed the file in the correct folder, (2) the filename is exactly prod.keys (not prod.keys.txt), and (3) the keys version matches or is newer than the firmware version used by your games.
Do I need firmware files too?
Yes, for full game compatibility most emulators also require Nintendo Switch firmware files in addition to prod.keys. Firmware provides the system software (like the home menu, eShop, and system services) that some games depend on. Check your emulator's documentation for how to install firmware.
